Trail description
Mount Hiei, 848 m, rises on the border of Kyoto and Otsu and has been a sacred mountain since ancient times, home to Enryakuji, the head temple of the Tendai school, a World Heritage site. This route climbs from the south on forest paths and tracks to Obiei, the higher of its two summits, with its first-order survey point. The mountain is also called Miyako Fuji for its shape seen from Kyoto. Cable cars, a ropeway and a toll road also reach the top, so it is busy on holidays.
