Trail description
Esan, 618 m, is an active volcano at the southeastern tip of the Oshima peninsula in Hakodate, jutting into the Pacific. This route climbs to the summit through bare reddish volcanic ground with fumaroles, where vegetation is sparse. Esan has long been a sacred mountain, a place of pilgrimage like Osorezan across the strait, and is famous for azaleas in spring. It lies in the Esan Prefectural Natural Park and is continuously monitored by the JMA.
