Trail description
Atago, 924 m, rises in the northwest of Kyoto on the old border of Yamashiro and Tanba and is, with Hiei, the most prominent mountain around the city. This route follows the main approach from Kiyotaki, with many steps, past the Hiuchi Gongen site to the Atago Shrine on the summit. The shrine has been worshipped for centuries as a protector against fire. Akechi Mitsuhide prayed here just before the Honnoji incident of 1582.
