Trail description

A 1.8 km walk through Okunoin on Mount Koya, the largest cemetery in Japan, with some 200,000 graves and memorials beneath centuries-old cedars. The paved path runs from the Ichinohashi bridge, where visitors bow before entering, to the Torodo lantern hall and the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi at the end, climbing only about 40 m. The site opened in 835 and holds the mausoleum of Kukai, founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism; the cemetery stretches over 2 km through tall cedar and cypress forest.
