Trail description
A climb of about 17.5 km and 1,150 m on the Choishi-michi, the old pilgrimage path from Jison-in at the foot of the mountain to the Daimon gate of Koyasan. The route is marked by 180 five-tiered stone posts called choishi, most of them set up between the 12th and 14th centuries, and it is said that Kobo Daishi walked it to visit his mother at Jison-in. The trail is part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage Site and makes a long full day on foot. It crosses two national roads near Yatate.
