Azuma-Kofuji

Trail description

Azuma-Kofuji, 1,707 m high, is a conical volcano about 6,000 years old in the Azuma mountains of Bandai-Asahi National Park; its name means 'little Fuji'. This very short route starts at the Jododaira Rest House on the Bandai-Azuma Skyline and climbs the winding wooden stairway up the cone, about 0.25 km with some 40 m of ascent, to the west rim of the crater. The crater is about 500 m across and 70 m deep, and the rim looks out over the Fukushima Basin and the Jododaira wetlands. The line ends where the stairs reach the rim; the circuit of the rim, which passes the peak at the crater's highest point and takes about 40 minutes to an hour on loose scree, is a possible extension but not part of this route.
