Rifugio Azzoni al Resegone
Trail description
The walk starts at the Piani d'Erna, the plateau above Lecco reached by cable car from the city, and goes by the Passo del Giuff, at the northern end of the Resegone's crest, to the Rifugio Luigi Azzoni, which stands at 1,860 m just below Punta Cermenati, the mountain's highest point. The Resegone takes its name from the Lombard word resegun, a large saw, because its nine main peaks seen from Lecco recall a saw blade, and it is made mostly of Dolomia Principale, a Late Triassic dolomite. The hut belongs to the Società Escursionisti Lecchesi, which bought it in the early 1920s as the Capanna Daina and renamed it after the Second World War for its long-serving treasurer, Luigi Azzoni. From the hut the view takes in much of the Alps, from the Aosta Valley to Trentino-Alto Adige, and the Po plain. The walk is about 5.1 km one way, with some 665 m of climbing.
