Trail description

A 3.7 km climb of about 360 m from the Cupa delle Cotaline ski area below Monte Acuto, past the Prati dell'Infilatoio and the Madonna degli Scout and up the mountain paths to the summit cross of Monte Catria, at 1,701 m. The mountain stands on the border between Umbria and the Marche and is the central and highest of the three main massifs of this part of the Apennines, between Monte Nerone to the north and Monte Cucco to the south. Since 22 August 1901 its summit has carried a huge cross, raised at the wish of Pope Leo XIII to mark the Jubilee of 1900. The top looks out over central Italy to the Adriatic coast, and on the mountain's slopes stands the hermitage of Fonte Avellana, founded in the 10th century and remembered by Dante in the Paradiso.
