Lago della Duchessa

Trail description

A steep 4.7 km climb of about 860 m from Cartore to the Lago della Duchessa, at 1,788 m in the Montagne della Duchessa regional reserve near Borgorose. The lake is one of the few alpine-type glacial lakes in the Apennines, in a high basin between the rock walls of Murolungo (2,184 m) and the slopes of Monte Morrone. In summer its meadows fill with buttercups, and it is a refuge of the crested newt.
