Trail description

A two-day ascent from the Shabil road, south of Meshgin Shahr in Ardabil province, to the 4,811 m summit of Sabalan, an extinct volcano whose summit crater holds a small lake. The night is spent at the north-east shelter at about 3,700 m; above 4,000 m the thin air slows most walkers, so take time to acclimatise.
