Trail description

A 1 km walk across the Leirhnjúkur lava field in the Krafla caldera, passing close to Leirhnjúkur, the clay peak, with about 30 m of climbing. The lava here poured from fissures in nine eruptions of the Krafla Fires between 1975 and 1984, and steam still rises from vents and mud pots beside the path. Keep to the marked paths and boardwalks, as the crust can hide thin, hot ground.
