Trail description
A short 1.4 km climb from the edge of the town on Heimaey to the top of Helgafell, an inactive 227 m volcanic cone. Helgafell formed in an eruption around 3950 BC that built much of the present island. Immediately to its north is Eldfell, whose eruption in January 1973 destroyed half the town and forced the evacuation of its 5,000 people.
