Trail description
A short, flat 0.9 km loop through the Dimmuborgir lava formations east of Mývatn. The pillars and caves formed about 2,300 years ago when a lava lake from the Þrengslaborgir and Lúdentsborgir crater row pooled over a marsh, and the boiling water rose through the lava as steam. When the crust collapsed, the hollow lava pillars were left standing like a ruined citadel, which gave the place its name, the dark castles.
