Trail description

A long ascent from the village of Anopoli in Sfakia to Pachnes, at 2,453 m the highest summit of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the second highest peak on Crete. The route climbs gradually into the high mountain desert, a lunar landscape of bare limestone. Walking all the way from Anopoli takes about 5 hours up; many people shorten it by driving a rough 4x4 track to about 1,950 m and hiking the last 1.5 to 2 hours. There is no shade or water high up.
