Trail description

The Syros section of the Greek Islands Trail starts at Grammata, a remote bay on the north coast where ancient inscriptions left by sailors can still be seen; the author recommends taking a small boat there and hiking back. The route crosses the rugged interior of the island with wide views of the Aegean. A highlight is the cave of Ferekydis, the philosopher said to have been a teacher of Pythagoras, who is believed to have meditated there. The trail then heads south to Ermoupoli, the neoclassical capital of Syros; it is 13.2 km with about 550 m of ascent.
