Drachenschlucht

Trail description

A 3.3 km walk from the Mariental on the southern edge of Eisenach through the Drachenschlucht, a gorge about 3 km long and only 68 cm wide at its narrowest, up to the Hohe Sonne on the Rennsteig. Steps cut into the rock and walkways of planks and gratings carry the path over the stream; winter ice and floods keep damaging them, and they are rebuilt again and again. The gorge lies in a nature reserve between the Wartburg and the Hohe Sonne, and the neighbouring Landgrafenschlucht can be added for a loop over the Hohe Sonne.
