Trail description
The walk leaves Vallon-Pont-d'Arc by the Pont de Salavas, follows the river path for a short way and then the Sur les Pas des Huguenots trail past Vieux Vallon to the Combe d'Arc, where paths drop to the left-bank beach facing the Pont d'Arc. The Combe d'Arc is the old meander the Ardèche abandoned when it wore through the limestone to form the arch, and it holds the original Chauvet cave, found in 1994, listed by UNESCO in 2014 and closed to the public. The arch has been a classified site since 1931, and a 2024 municipal order bans walking on top of it and diving from it. The walk is about 4.4 km one way, with some 190 m of climbing.
