Colorado Provençal
Trail description
The loop starts at the paid Mille Couleurs car park on the D22 near Rustrel and follows the site's waymarked tracks and paths through the Sahara and by the Cheminées de Fées, keeping to the marked paths and viewpoints before returning to the car park. The Colorado Provençal is a set of open-air ochre quarries worked from 1871 to 1991, now a private site listed as a natural monument of historic interest, where old quarry faces, settling basins and water channels can still be seen. The Cheminées de Fées and the other cliffs are closed by municipal order because of the risk of falls and rockfall. From 15 June to 15 September access depends on the Vaucluse prefectoral order on forest fire risk: at very severe risk only the Sahara circuit stays open, and at extreme risk the site is closed. The loop is about 4.1 km, with some 115 m of climbing.
