Trail description
The walk starts at a car park in La Bourboule and climbs through Murat-le-Quaire on waymarked paths and tracks to the summit of the Banne d'Ordanche, approached from the west. The Banne is a volcanic summit of the Monts Dore that formed about 2 million years ago and was later worn down by erosion; it gave its name to a type of lava, ordanchite, and 'banne' means 'horn' in the local dialect. At the top, an orientation table of enamelled lava points out the Puy de Sancy and the other peaks in the 360-degree view. The walk is about 5.7 km one way, with some 620 m of climbing.
