Trail description
The loop starts at the entrance of the Humberstone saltpeter works, runs through the streets of the former company town and out to the industrial ruins and chimney, and returns to the entrance. The works were founded in 1872 as La Palma and renamed Santiago Humberstone in 1934, after the English engineer James Thomas Humberstone; a theater, school and hospital were built in the following years, and the works closed for good in 1960. Together with the nearby Santa Laura works, Humberstone was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Entry is paid, one ticket covers both works, and the water available on site is not drinkable. The loop is about 2.0 km and flat.
