Trail description
The walk starts at the north end of Playa Norte and follows the Punta Arenas seafront south beside the Strait of Magellan on the promenade of Av. Costanera del Estrecho, passing the monument to the crew of the schooner Ancud, and ends near the Muelle Prat. The Ancud carried the expedition that took possession of the strait for Chile on 21 September 1843, and the city was founded on 18 December 1848, when Governor José Santos Mardones moved the settlement here from Fuerte Bulnes. Before the Panama Canal opened in 1914, Punta Arenas was the main port on the sea route between the Pacific and the Atlantic through the strait. The walk is about 2.3 km one way and flat.
