Cerro Nielol
Trail description
The loop starts at the entrance of the Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol at the north end of Av. Arturo Prat in Temuco and climbs the monument's footways and trails to the lookout, with an out-and-back along the Sendero Los Copihues, before descending by the Sendero Los Lingues. On 24 February 1881 Mapuche representatives and the Chilean Army met on the hill to sign a peace treaty, the event that marks the start of Temuco's history. Created as a national tourism park in 1939, the 89 ha monument protects native forest of lingue, olivillo, peumo and other trees, along with the copihue, Chile's national flower. Entry is paid and the monument is normally open Tuesday to Sunday, though CONAF closes it when weather or safety conditions require. The loop is about 3.7 km, with some 185 m of climbing.
