Cerro Mackay

Trail description

A steep 4.5 km climb with about 850 m of ascent from Avenida Ogana on the edge of Coyhaique, up the Camino Cerro Mackay to the 1,205 m summit of Cerro Mackay. The mountain rises south of the city and east of the Simpson River and is part of Coyhaique's best-known skyline. It is built of intrusive rock and volcanic necks from the Late Cretaceous, and its slopes carry forest of ñirre, lenga and coigüe. Allow at least two hours up and a little over an hour down; a flag marks the summit, with a box where climbers leave mementos.
