Laguna Verde Avaroa

Trail description

A nearly flat 3.5 km hike at an elevation of about 4,330 m, following roads and vehicle tracks between Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, passing the Laguna Verde viewpoint in the Eduardo Abaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. Laguna Verde is a 7.5 km² salt lake whose waters shift from turquoise to dark emerald due to suspended minerals such as arsenic, magnesium, calcium carbonate, and lead, stirred by the wind. Behind it rises the inactive, nearly conical Licancabur volcano at 5,868 m; the two lakes, which were a single body of water during the last glacial maximum, are now connected by a single channel.
