Trail description
A 2.9 km loop with 23 m of climb from the Slagmolen, the old watermill that is De Maten's visitor centre, on Natuurpunt's blue marked walk (the Karekiet walk) through the reserve between its ponds and reed beds. De Maten, between Genk and Hasselt, is one of the oldest nature reserves in Flanders and part of the De Wijers pond area: medieval fish ponds, reed where bitterns boom in the breeding season, and heath with drift sand. The Slagmolen, renovated in 2025, has a café and information desk; dogs on a lead are welcome in the reserve except on parts of this blue route.
