Trail description

A 3.2 km walk with about 155 m of climbing from Semmering station, past the memorial to Carl Ritter von Ghega and up through the resort along the Hochstraße, then on woodland paths past Wolfsbergkogel to the Doppelreiterwarte and the 20-Schilling-Blick above the Semmering railway. From the viewpoint you see the same view of the line that was printed on the 20-schilling banknote from 1968 to 1989, with the Kalte Rinne viaduct on its back and a portrait of the railway's builder, Ghega, on its front. From the Doppelreiterwarte, a few minutes before it, there is a wide panorama and passing trains can be watched. Europe's first standard-gauge mountain railway, the Semmering line became in 1998 the first railway in the world to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
