Cuevas de Walichu

Trail description

A 4.3 km walk with about 20 m of climbing from the edge of El Calafate along the gravel road above Lago Argentino to Punta Walichu and its caves. The archaeological site, about 8 km from the town centre, has sandstone shelters used some 4,000 years ago, with rock paintings of abstract figures and hands. Most of the original paintings are worn by erosion and careless visitors, so reproductions are shown. Visits are guided and charged at the site.
