Trail description
The Camino de los Españoles is the colonial mule road over El Ávila between Caracas and the port of La Guaira, ordered in 1589 along an indigenous trail and used as the main link to the sea until a carriage road opened in 1845. This section descends about 1,150 m toward the coast on a road once guarded by forts such as Castillo Negro and El Salto, with stretches of 18th century stone paving. There is no water on the way; start early and walk in daylight.
