Mount Meru Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak

This is only the summit day of the Mount Meru climb in Arusha National Park, from Saddle Hut at 3,500 m over Rhino Point and along the narrow crater rim to Socialist Peak at 4,562 m, the fifth highest summit in Africa, reached at sunrise. The full climb from Momella Gate takes four days: up to Miriakamba Hut, on to Saddle Hut, this summit day starting around 1 am and ending back down at Miriakamba, and out to the gate. An armed park ranger is required for every group, the ridge is exposed and icy at times, and the height brings a real risk of altitude sickness.
