Dauģēni Trail

Trail description

This 9.6 km route follows the Dauģēni trail through the Salaca valley nature park near Mazsalaca, part of a 12 km path billed as Latvia's longest equipped nature trail. It passes the Dauģēni sandstone cliffs, up to 13 m high, which hold the Great and Small Dauģēni caves, the longest caves in Latvia, and stairs lead to a viewing platform at the Avotu cirks spring bowl. There are eight rest areas and parking at the cliffs; the caves shelter hibernating bats, so visits are discouraged in autumn and winter.
