Trail description

A demanding 9.8 km ascent with 1,700 m of elevation gain from El Carmen, near San Ignacio, via the Peñón de Cayaguanca trail and forest paths to the summit of Cerro El Pital, 2,730 m, the highest point in El Salvador. The mountain sits right on the border with Honduras, and its highest point, La Horqueta, is where the two countries meet. It is covered by a humid forest of pine, oak, encino, and cypress, and is one of the coldest places in the country, with a camping area located between its two peaks.
