Trail description
A 6.3 km hike along roads and trails, passing near the El Yunque campsite, to the flat summit of El Yunque, the most famous mountain in Guantánamo, near Baracoa. Columbus described it in 1492 as a high, square mountain that looked like an island, and it has served as a landmark for navigators ever since. Its summit, at about 560 m, is a large limestone massif heavily karstified over tuff rocks; it was declared a National Monument in 1980 and is home to abundant birdlife such as the tocroro, the cuban dove, and the white-eared dove.
