How it works

Upload a photo of a mountain. If your camera saved GPS and a compass direction, we use both.

We work out every peak that is above the horizon from that spot and not hidden behind nearer terrain.

If the compass direction alone names the peak, that is your answer. Otherwise we compare the photo against the shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it need my location?
A mountain photo on its own is very hard to identify. Knowing where you stood turns it into a solvable geometry problem: we can work out exactly which peaks were visible and in which direction.
Why did it not find my mountain?
Most often because that peak is not in our database yet. We hold around 12,600 named peaks, which covers the main hiking regions well and thinner areas less so.
Do you keep my photo?
No. The photo is resized in your browser and, when we need to compare it against nearby peaks, sent for that one check and never stored.
