How it works

  1. 1

Enter the hike distance and how much climbing (and steep descending) the route has.

  2. 2

Pick a pace - relaxed, average or fast - to match your group.

  3. 3

Get a realistic time estimate you can use to plan a start time and turnaround point.

Frequently asked questions

What is Naismith's rule?

A classic mountaineering rule of thumb from 1892: allow one hour for every 5 km of distance plus one hour for every 600 m of ascent.

Does the calculator account for breaks?

No - the estimate is pure walking time. Add 10-15 minutes of breaks per hour on longer hikes, plus time for lunch and photos.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a solid planning baseline for fit hikers on decent trails. Rough terrain, snow, a heavy pack or a large group can add 25% or more.
